steve kutcher has worked on over seventy-five feature films including spiderman, alien and arachnophobia. he specializes in doing unusual things with insects (tricks, costuming, coloring, obtaining, and consulting & solving bug problems.) his house is a large insect zoo for both the living and the dead, including 200,000 dead flies, which he sells to hollywood to use w/scenes that might have a dead body, or a dirty kitchen.. these are not just any bugs... some of his most difficult challenges for the entertainment industry have included developing techniques to make a cockroach run across the floor (from a stomping foot) and flip over on its back on cue, creating a foam harness for a tarantula so he could safely paint it and training a live wasp to fly into an actors mouth. the bug wrangler's latest adventure is bug art. to create his art the insects are carefully held and watercolor pigments are transferred to insect legs and body parts. the artistic bugs are then placed on the canvas and produce the incredible works of art. his paintings highlight the connection between science and art; between the natural environment and the human experience; between classic art techniques and abstract expressionism. kutcher has a show scheduled in the upcoming months at the museum of contemporary art in russia and will be this years artist in residence at the pasadena armory center for the arts. over 100 articles have been written about him including articles in the wall street journal, los angeles times, detroit news, and science world. he has appeared on many tv and radio programs including the tonight show, late night with david letterman and the garry shandling show. in this pod we will explore how he manipulates a bugs behavior, the unique techniques and methods to create bug art and view the incredible works of art first hand. a wacky tour through his private insect zoo will also be included as well as close ups of all the bugs you love to hate.
